1992 - 1995: B.Eng (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch , South Africa. Final year thesis on the application of the timewarping neural network to speech recognition.

1996 - 1997: M.Eng (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Graduate coursework in pattern recognition, general signal processing, speech signal processing, telecommunications, mathematics and artificial intelligence. Thesis on topic spotting in conversational speech.

Jan 1998 - Aug 1998: Research Engineer at Peralex Electronics , Cape Town, South Africa. Research on signal processing in telecommunications applications.

Oct 1998 - May 2002: PhD in the Speech, Vision and Robotics group at the Cambridge University Engineering Department. Thesis on automatic design of spoken dialogue systems.

Jul 2002 - December 2003: Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of the Western Cape.

Jan 2003 - present: Postdoctoral research fellow at the South African National Bioinformatics Institute.
